Who really needs Dragon

If you are a physician dictating into an EHR or a lawyer drafting briefs — Dragon Medical and Dragon Legal remain the industry standard. They ship specialised dictionaries with tens of thousands of medical and legal terms we do not and will not have in the near term. If you are in that niche — Dragon is your answer, and our honest position: we are worse for you. For everyone else, we are better.

Product history

Dragon NaturallySpeaking launched in 1997 from Dragon Systems. In the 2000s Nuance Communications bought the company. In 2021 Microsoft acquired Nuance for $19.7 billion — primarily for Dragon Medical and Microsoft 365 Copilot integration. Consumer Dragon Home effectively stopped evolving: the last major release was years ago. It still works fine — but no new features are expected.

Total cost of ownership

Dragon Home: $200 licence, plus ~$100 every 2-3 years when a new Windows ships. Over 6 years — about $400-500. Dragon Professional: $500+ one-time, enterprise licence with support. AuroraWhisp Pro: $19.90 once, all future updates free forever. An order of magnitude difference.
